The Liverpool and Manchester Railway

The Liverpool and Manchester Railway (1830)

Museum of Science & Industry

The need to transport more cotton more quickly was a major factor in the creation of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, seen in this print of about 1830 when the railway first opened. Slave-grown American cotton formed part of the first goods consignment carried by the railway in December 1830.
